The Impacts of Media Coverage for Muscians

Press coverage is a particularly significant role in the music industry. It has the power to influence the public’s overall impression of an artist and the brand that they are attempting to portray. Press coverage, coverage, or just press, generally refers to the publicity: attention given to something by the media, provided by various types of media outlets. Press could be as simple as an album review on a blog, an interview, a full fledged concert review, or a post on a popular social media site. There are endless amounts of ways media can cover a topic, but these are typically the most common in the music industry and what can be easily found when searching a popular musician. With the growing prominence of social media in everyday life, production of types of press is being put out and the sheer scale of these media outlets has increased exponentially and has become even more widespread with its reach. Loudwire, one of the most prominent rock music news channels, launched in 2011 when only about 30% of the population had the internet. Now over 67.5% of the population is on the internet, demonstrating the significance of press, particularly on sites similar to Loudwire. This is especially important with the ridiculous increase in music releases; more than 100,000 fresh songs being added to different streaming services every day. (Adamic.) With no sign of digital media decreasing in popularity, it is only assumed that this pattern will continue on. This in turn can increase not only the opportunities for musicians but also the pressures on them. Looking into the impact of coverage calls for being able to understand how media can and has shaped the narratives of these artists and the multitude of positive effects there can be on them including economic, brand image, and establishment.

The sales and economic advantages that performing artists can receive from different kinds of press are substantial. When an artist receives positive publicity, it can translate into heightened public interest, which then in turn can increase sales, (due to their larger or more invested fan base), whether these sales be physical albums, streams, merchandise, or any other products. This boost in sales can significantly impact an artist's revenue, especially if they were not receiving efficient funding prior. On top of that, many people do not know that the cost of press can be little to nothing. When an artist is being featured in blogs, magazines, or news outlets, the media producers who put out the content often generate revenue from clicks or advertisements on their sites. This makes the cost of writing an article, photographing an event, or other coverage options, worth it for the media. Creating coverage is a win-win on both the publication side and the artist side, one gaining revenue, clicks, or just putting out a passion project, and the other gaining media attention from it. This cost-effective publicity has the power of offering substantial advertising with no added price tag onto the artist unlike most advertisements, (think Spotify ads.); which allows the funds to be allocated into far more essential parts, such as higher-quality music, hiring better producers, and purchasing better touring equipment..

The development of a brand image, storyline, persona, or aesthetic, for an artist is crucial to their success. A brand image forms a type of identity for themselves that fans can really connect with, leaving their work much more memorable and most importantly, recognizable. Coverage gives artists the opportunity to express their story and self, allowing listeners and fans to see further into the work they produce. (Adamic.) Whether it be how the musician dresses, what their songs sound like, or their logos, coverage can play a significant role in the mentioned process. Coverage that matches the musician's growing persona can back it up for consumers. When independent web pages run content associated with a local artist, it can attract nearby buzz. As local news outlets pick up the story, the musician's reach can expand, potentially leading to catching the eye of larger media outlets, offering the once local musician a larger focus. Each step on this track can amplify the musician’s image and narrative, making them more recognizable to an audience and appealing to the general public. This multi-faceted approach to press helps ensure that the musician’s given brand, persona, or "lore,” is actively enforced and can grow in a more organic sense.

Press can notably boost a musician's establishment in the music industry and lead to a new door of opportunities. When a musician gains media attention, it has the possibility of attracting the eye of record labels, producers, and other professionals in the industry who are looking for new and emerging talent and which most often conduct online research before choosing talents. (Adamic.) This increase in visibility has the potential to lead to different record deals, which in turn can provide the necessary funding and support for an artist to produce higher-quality music and reach broader audiences, which could have previously been seen as unattainable for them. Producers might be more interested in working with a musician that has a consistently growing reputation, offering their expertise to elevate that musician's brand and sound.

Economics, brand image, and establishment are all affected by coverage, and without it, many musicians and artists that are big names now would not have the same reach that they have now. Press, whether a small blog or a viral website, each has its roles in continuing to promote artists through the consumers. Without press, musicians and artists in the industry could struggle to grow recognition and credibility. Coverage serves as a beneficial way for artists to build recognition with fans and networking with industry professionals, helping to expand their reach and grow their careers.
