Steely Dane played the Oshkosh Grand on January 31, 2026, delivering a set that showed the audience why they’re called the “Ultimate Steely Dan Tribute.” The crowd was exactly what you’d expect for a show like this in Wisconsin: loud, enthusiastic, and clearly having a good time, with plenty of singing along and more than a few drinks in hand.
What separates Steely Dane from most tribute acts is the size and makeup of the band. The 14-piece lineup allows them to replicate the depth and complexity of Steely Dan’s studio recordings in a live setting. With a four-piece horn section, two guitars, two keyboards, female “foreground singers,” percussion, and vibraphone, the songs truly filled the theater, creating a scene of celebration for Yacht Rock. The extra instrumentation paid off, especially in the horn lines and layered harmonies that often get lost in smaller live groups.

“I mean, how often nowadays do you see such a large group of musicians recreating loved songs instead of using crazy backing tracks?” -Concert Attendee
Steely Dane began in 2010 as a one-night-only show in Madison called Steely Dane, featuring 36 musicians from Dane County. The show sold out, and several members decided it made sense to keep it going. Over time, the project evolved into a permanent band, gradually trimming down to the current 14-piece lineup modeled after Steely Dan’s touring ensemble.
That approach makes sense given Steely Dan’s own history. After a short early run as a touring band, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker largely retreated to the studio, relying on top-tier session musicians to record their albums. While the songs became radio staples, many fans never had the chance to hear them performed live.

Today, with Steely Dan touring infrequently and tickets often priced out of reach, bands like Steely Dane fill that gap. Steely Dane now plays 20–30 shows a year, focusing mainly on theaters and performing arts centers across the Midwest, along with select festivals in the summer including Atwoodfest in Madison 2025. Their audience continues to span generations, from longtime fans who grew up with the music to younger listeners who you could tell at the shot enjoyed it just as much.

At the Oshkosh Grand, the result was an intimate yet polished, and confident performance that balanced technical accuracy while adding enough twist that kept people out of their seats. Steely Dane doesn’t just recreate the songs well, they give fans an impactful show. You can keep tabs with the band, and find upcoming shows on their website, https://steelydane.com/.
