Milwaukee Metal Fest roared back to life on Friday, May 16, 2025, at The Rave/Eagles Club, delivering a marathon of metal that spanned genres and generations. With a lineup that stretched from early hours (1pm is early right?) into the late night, the festival offered a full day of hardcore music to those local and the visiting metal community.
The Early Grind: Local Flavor and Underground Fury
The day kicked off with a slew of underground and local acts that set the tone for the chaos to come. Even with the smaller crowds the early hours brought, bands like 6FIVE6, Surefire, and Ruin Dweller brought raw energy to the stage, warming up the early crowd. While these sets were solid, they often felt like appetizers before the main course. (Mainly due to their short set time… some under 30 minutes.) The Copycat Media/Reigning Phoenix Music Stage (aka the bar stage that overflows the second a band starts.), was a hotspot for intimate chaos, with bands like Wormrot and No / Más turning the small venue into a frenzy of noise, moshing, crowdsurfing, and stage diving.

Midday Mayhem: International Titans and Cult Favorites
As the day progressed, the festival escalated in intensity. Rotting Christ delivered a strong set on the Sumerian Records Stage, (Main Stage), that blended black metal with atmospheric depth, drawing a dedicated crowd to their ritualistic performance. Following them, recently viral band, Pentagram brought a dose of classic doom, (once th microphone started working.), with their heavy riffs and haunting melodies resonating through the venue, which was packed to the brim for their set. (Search Bobby Liebling on TikTok and you’ll know what I’m talking about.)

Suicide Silence injected some modern deathcore energy into the mix, with frontman Eddie Hermida engaging the crowd in a high-octane performance that had fans moshing and crowd surfing. Paradise Lost offered a more melodic contrast, their gothic doom providing a moment of introspection amidst the chaos. Their atmospheric set was a welcome respite for those seeking a different flavor of heaviness.
Evening Surge: Legacy Acts and Fan Favorites
A Tribute to S.O.D. – Stormbreeders of Death offered a fun and energetic homage to S.O.D., with Anthrax’s Scott Ian and Dan Lilker, along with Hatebreed vocalist Jamey Jasta and Ian’s 13-year-old son Revel on drums, had the crowd singing along to every classic track. Their high-energy performance was a crowd-pleaser, and a personal favorite. (Maybe biased because I’m a huge S.O.D. fan but whatever I never said I was impartial anyways.)

As night fell, the festival reached its peak. Enslaved took the stage with their progressive black metal, delivering a set that was both cerebral and powerful, leaving the medium sized stage packed, and arguably needing the larger headlining stage.
Chimaira, reunited for their special performance, brought a wave of nostalgia and aggression to the crowd. Their set was a relentless assault of metalcore, with fans responding enthusiastically to every breakdown and riff.

The Grand Finale: Down's Monumental Headlining Set
The night culminated with Down, the Southern sludge metal supergroup, delivering a set that was both a celebration of their legacy and a testament to their enduring power. Fans have made comments such as, “That show was incredible. They were dialed all the way in.” and, “Was a great 1st day. Things were set up very well. We didn't miss a band bouncing from one to the next catching part of every show. Looking forward to Sunday's show!!” on various social medias.
Overall Impressions: A Festival Reborn
Milwaukee Metal Fest 2025 – Day One was a resounding success. Most notable was the management, which comparing to other festivals, was implacable. Bands nearly always started right on time, there were no obnoxious crowds that held up movement (other than maybe the bar stage but what do you expect?), and kept the crowds happy. The annual festival held up a diverse lineup, strong performances, and a strong sense of community in the Milwaukee Metal Scene.
